Horrific reaction to steroids leaves mother feeling like she’s ‘been stung by 1,000 bees’

If you’re worried about any side effects, ask your GP or asthma nurse for advice as soon as possible. For example, if you have an upset stomach after taking steroids, your GP may suggest taking the tablet with meals or after food. You’re less likely to get side effects from a short course of steroid tablets (less than three weeks).

Who gets allergies?

The choice of drugs in subsequent anaesthesia is guided by the result of allergy tests and the clinical indication for the drugs. If no safe alternative is available, the patient may need to undergo desensitisation towards the triggering medication before an elective procedure. Desensitisation needs to be done by the immunologist in the intensive care setting with close monitoring of the patient.

Common side effects of steroids

Additional side effects can include bleeding in the bowels or the stomach, high blood pressure, diminished healing capacity, lack of muscle growth (atrophy), electrolyte imbalance in the body and weight gain (obesity). However, this specific kind of topical steroid withdrawal reaction could be an extreme form of this reaction. Symptoms noted include redness of the skin, a burning sensation, and itchiness. If you have diabetes already, you might need to check your blood sugar levels more often than usual. Steroids can hide or change the signs and symptoms of some infections. Antihistamines are probably the best known type of allergy medicine, and most are available from a pharmacy without a prescription (although some, such as Telfast, are prescription-only). These medicines work by blocking the action of histamine, which is the chemical that causes symptoms during an allergic reaction. However, it is often impossible to avoid allergens altogether and there are a number of medicines and allergy treatments that can relieve symptoms when they occur. It does not contain steroids, so it cannot reduce inflammation in your airways. Your doctor may check your general condition such as height, weight, blood pressure and sugar levels. You should let your dentist know you are on steroids if you are having dental treatment.

Don’t have immunisations with live vaccines while you’re having treatment and for up to 12 months afterwards. Ask your doctor or pharmacist how long you should avoid live vaccinations.
